A photographer traces Tokyo's hidden layers — moss gardens, Kawabata's writing room, a shichi-go-san ceremony — before arriving, finally, at what he had saved for last.
A personal tribute to Martin Parr — and a reflection on what it means to photograph people with care rather than judgment, at a time when trust between photographer and subject has almost disappeared.
A photographic journey through the WW2 battlefields of Manipur — the Shenam Saddle, Sangshak, Kohima — where the Fourteenth Army fought Britain's greatest forgotten battle in the jungles of northeast India.
What
DS is about
Most photography online is built around gear launches, and the idea that better equipment makes better pictures. We kinda disagree. We enjoy learning to see, understanding why we photograph, discovering new angles on familiar places …
We enjoy gear as much as anyone, we just don’t make it the point.
DearSusan is more like a conversation than a traditional top-down blog. Since 2009, more than forty photographers from around the world have written here, and the comments they've received have often been as valuable as the posts themselves. Tens of thousands of exchanges, arguments, discoveries and moments of recognition between people who take photography seriously without taking themselves too seriously.
Our goal is to create and foster a community of like-minded individuals who help one another develop a personal vision and enjoy their craft. Genres usually include travel, nature, architecture, street, but any legal and ethical photography is welcome :)
Over fifteen years we have interviewed some of the world's great photographic artists — Michael Kenna, Hans Strand, Paula Chamlee, Ming Thein and many others. We have reviewed cameras and lenses under embargo for major manufacturers. We have written about printing, about light, about the philosophy of the image, about places most travel photography never reaches.
We take the work seriously. But fun is part of the package.
