#488. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (of the photo gear world)
It took film director Sergio Leone 3 people (played by actors Clint Eastwood, Lee van Cleef and Eli Wallach) to give life to the title. But, in the 80s, hallowed car magazine Car, led by the indomitable LJK Setright, picked this title for one of its fixtures. A brief summary of what was right, and what was wrong, about each of the world’s cars. That didn’t sound like much, except that the one-line captions were both accurate and outrageous. Just like Leone’s dramatic characters. And, in both cases, never without humour.
In that spirit, I have decided to put up DearSusan’s own version of the Good, the Bad and the Ugly. As it happens, there are 3 of us at DearSusan, and you can easily figure out that I am the Ugly … 🙁
So, on this page, you will be able to get a brief summary of what we think of various pieces of equipment. Except that, being amateurs writing for a free site, we are totally unconstrained by financial considerations or courtesy to paying clients.
And, let’s be quite clear, we are also fully unconstrained when it come to opinions, biases, and a large sense of mischief. Oh ye of little humour, enter at your peril!
This doesn’t mean that what we write is nonsense. Humour is never totally nonsensical. Let me give you a taste of what you can find, rating DearSusan as though it were a piece of gear:
- The Good: well, “it” brought you this far, didn’t it?
- The Bad: unless “that” brought you this far
- The Ugly: I wouldn’t dare suggest that “this” is why you’re here
- Who is it for? if you have to ask, is it really for you?
- Sum-up: addictive. As everybody knows, addictions are bad for the soul
If, after this, you still feel like reading our very biased opinions on the world of photographic gear, here is page one, devoted to system cameras ! 🙂
